At the NATO Innovation Hub, we utilize the latest technology to solve complex challenges and create cutting-edge solutions with a talented and diverse global team. Recently, our intern from Germany, Philip, exemplified this spirit of innovation by tackling a unique challenge: improving the safety of our holographic fan display.
The Challenge: Safety Meets Innovation
Holographic fans produce captivating 3D visual effects by rotating LED-embedded blades at high speeds. However, due to the rapid movement of the blades, there is a potential safety hazard, particularly in settings where the device may be accessible to the public or other team members.
Because of this, Philip was tasked with designing and producing a 3D-printed prop guard for the holographic fan. The goal was simple but critical: to maintain the visual impact of the holographic display while ensuring that the rotating blades were safely surrounded, preventing any accidental contact.
The Solution: A 3D-Printed Safety Guard
Philip leveraged his 3D design and printing experience to create a custom safety guard that fits around the holographic fan. This guard is lightweight yet sturdy, allowing for easy attachment without compromising the fan’s performance or the clarity of the images it produces. After several rapid iterations and finely-tuned adjustments, Philip printed the final product using our in-house 3D printers. From design to implementation, this project was completed at lighting speed, and was finished in only a matter of days.
Impact and Future Applications
This innovative solution has not only enhanced safety but also opened up new possibilities for using holographic fans in various environments. With the safety guard in place, NATO members can confidently deploy the technology in public spaces, exhibitions, and collaborative settings.
This project exemplifies hands-on learning and innovative thinking. By solving this issue in such a practical and efficient way, we’ve added yet another solution to our collection of innovations at NATO Innovation Hub.
