MPol – Maritime Pattern of Life

Pattern-of-life analysis is a method of surveillance specifically used for documenting or understanding a subject’s habits. This form of observation is generally done without the consent of the subject, with motives including but not limited to security, profit, scientific research, regular censuses, and traffic analysis.

Maritime Pattern of Life (MPoL) is a powerful tool that helps monitor, analyze and understand vessel movements. It is based on the Automatic Identification System (AIS). AIS is a maritime tracking system that helps ships identify and locate each other by transmitting real-time data, such as position, speed, and course, to avoid collisions and improve navigation safety. Even though vessels send tens of million AIS messages a day, MPoL with its intelligent architecture offers rapid analysis of vessel movements in playback mode even for large areas and longer periods of time. This way operator can concentrate on a specific problem that needs detailed view or get a birds perspective on what is happening in a large area or over larger period of time.

The tool supports different density maps, tagging specific vessels of interest that are frequently monitored, marking of vessels with wrong ID (MMSI), creating and monitoring different areas of interest, importing important geo data (e.g.: exclusive economic zones, underwater infrastructure…) filtering by different vessel characteristics or vessel routes, statistics of port visits and search of specific vessel by its main identification attributes.
